May 8, 2006
Hong Kong Porsche owners are leading the way in advanced driving techniques with a record number taking part in the latest Zurich-Porsche Advanced Driver Training Course held for the third time at Zhuhai International Circuit from April 28 to 30. Thirty one Porsche owners signed up for the training course, while twenty percent of whom returning for the second or third time.
Participants in the Zurich-Porsche Advanced Driver Training Course were instructed in their own vehicles, thus ensuring maximum retention and understanding of the skills learned from professional Porsche Instructor and full-time Team Jebsen racing driver, Darryl O'Young, plus two additional Official Instructors for Porsche Germany.
Commented Mr. William Cheung who took part for the third time in his 911 Carrera 4 Coup, along with his brother, "It's a great opportunity to get to know my car better, to unleash its amazing potential, and to learn what I can do with my car both on the track and on the road."
The course was specifically designed to give participants a greater all-round understanding of their cars, and to hone their driving skills particularly in the areas of safety and car control. The programme was extended by half a day for the latest session. Included in it were theory as well as practical sessions, such as "follow me" with the Instructors, slalom, wet braking (which was new to the course this time), and dealing with over- and under-steering. Drivers who were taking part in their second or third course were grouped together for training and awarded precision level certificates.
As an added benefit, Zurich Insurance Group (Hong Kong), Porsche partner in the training courses, provides a renewal offering for motor insurance for those who had also participated in previous courses. Commented Zurich's Director of General Business, Allan Yu, "We are extremely pleased to see the importance placed on road safety by Hong Kong Porsche owners. Zurich is also delighted to be able to reward those who keep enhancing their driving skills. The popularity of the Zurich-Porsche Advanced Driver Training Course proves there is simply no substitute for having a professional instructor giving one-to-one tutoring on how to drive in a safe and responsible manner, while increasing the road safety and the sheer pleasure of motoring."
O'Young, 26, Team Jebsen's driver in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia racing series, takes his responsibilities as an Official Porsche Instructor as seriously as he does his racing career "For every driver in the world, whether on public roads or the race track, car control is a crucial skill as it's a thorough knowledge of your vehicle. Once you have learned the skills to become a better and safer driver, they stay with you for a lifetime and it is one of the most pleasurable parts of my job to pass on to others the techniques I have spent so many years perfecting."
Due to the continued enthusiastic feedback from Porsche owners, the next Zurich-Porsche Advanced Driver Training course has already been confirmed from October 13 to 15, also at Zhuhai International Circuit. Said Porsche Centre Hong Kong General Manager (Hong Kong & Macau), Robby Niermann, "The response to our courses has been extremely positive, and it is interesting to see how keen Porsche owners are to improve their driving skills. All the participants genuinely benefit from spending time with Darryl and taking part in the course, and we can all see immediate improvements in the quality of their driving skills."
